Inquest into Prof Ken Walibora’s mysterious death begins with police testimony
The inquest seeks to establish the exact circumstances leading to his death, including claims of delayed medical attention and unanswered questions surrounding the hit-and-run incident.
A public inquest into the mysterious death of renowned author and former Nation Media Group (NMG) journalist Prof. Ken Walibora has formally opened, with the court hearing its first testimony from a traffic police officer who was among the earliest responders at the scene.
Appearing before the inquest magistrate, Corporal Mwanagisi Hilal recounted that on April 10, 2020, she found Prof. Walibora lying on the road in great pain after reportedly being hit by a speeding minibus near the Machakos Country Bus Park in Nairobi.

Hilal told the court that she was on routine traffic duty when she received information about an accident involving a pedestrian.
On arriving at the scene, she found the award-winning author "writhing in pain," with members of the public attempting to assist him.
She said the vehicle believed to have struck him had already fled, and witnesses only described it as a minibus travelling at high speed.
The officer testified that attempts to quickly secure a vehicle to rush the injured scholar to the hospital were hampered by the chaotic traffic conditions at the busy terminus. Eventually, Prof. Walibora was transferred to the hospital, but he later succumbed to his injuries.
The inquest seeks to establish the exact circumstances leading to his death, including claims of delayed medical attention and unanswered questions surrounding the hit-and-run incident.
Several witnesses, including medics, police officers, and eyewitnesses, are expected to testify in the coming sessions.
Prof. Walibora, celebrated for his literary works such as Siku Njema, died at the age of 56, sparking widespread calls for a thorough investigation into the events surrounding his final moments.
The hearing continues.
